Glossary

Appeals: a legal proceeding by which a case is brought before a higher court for review of the decision of a lower court.

Assistive Technology: Any device, software, or equipment that helps to increase or maintain the ability of persons with disabilities functioning in daily living.

Auxiliary Aids and Services: Auxiliary is a word that describes something that provides additional help. The terms auxiliary aid and auxiliary service describe communications tools or assistance offered to someone with a disability such as large print or a sign language interpreter.

Beneficiary: is a natural person or other legal entity who receives money or other benefits from a benefactor.

Defendant: a person, company, or institution sued or accused in a court of law.

Fundamental alteration: changes the essential nature of the program, activity or service

Guardianship: is a legal arrangement where a court appoints a person or entity to make decisions for someone who is unable to do so for themselves. 

Judicial refers to anything related to the courts, judges, or the legal system. It involves the process of interpreting and applying laws to resolve disputes, enforce laws, and ensure justice is served.

Juror: a member of a jury in a court of law who listens to testimony, reviews evidence, and decides the facts of a case in accordance with the law as explained by a judge.

Plaintiff: a person who brings a case against another in a court of law.

Reasonable Modification: A reasonable modification is a change in a policy, practice, or procedure that is done to offer equal access and equal opportunity for a person with a disability.

Undue burden: significant difficulty or expense.
