Staff Attorney
Disability Rights South Carolina, a Section 501(c)(3) nonprofit public interest advocacy organization, was created in the 1970s for the purpose of protecting and advancing the rights of people with disabilities through education, advocacy, and litigation. Congress mandated the creation of a protection and advocacy agency in every U.S. state and territory. DRSC is the protection and advocacy agency for the state of South Carolina, serving people with disabilities by providing information, self-advocacy support, technical assistance, monitoring and investigation of providers of disability services, and legal representation. Areas of DRSC’s legal practice include, but are not limited to abuse and neglect, Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 enforcement, special education and accommodations, disability-related vocational services, community integration, and voting rights.
DRSC seeks to hire a Staff Attorney to join its legal team. Job duties may include any of the following: providing individual and systemic legal advice and representation in litigation and administrative proceedings to ensure protection of the rights of people with disabilities; investigating allegations of abuse and neglect; monitoring public and private facilities and service providers for abuse, neglect, and compliance with federal and state laws; drafting investigative and monitoring reports; and otherwise supporting the work of DRSC’s projects and outreach efforts.
The successful applicant must be admitted to the South Carolina Bar or be eligible for admission by examination or transfer of an existing Uniform Bar Examination score. Excellent written and oral communication skills, ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues, and commitment to DRSC’s mission and to the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion are required. Public interest, civil rights, or disability law experience is preferred, but candidates of all experience levels will be considered. Compensation will be competitive with that offered by other nonprofits for candidates with similar qualifications. DRSC offers all full-time employees health insurance and retirement benefits. This position will remain open until filled.
While some aspects of working at DRSC will require physical presence and performance of in-person tasks, DRSC has widely implemented telecommuting and encourages candidates preferring remote work to apply. DRSC is an equal opportunity employer, and members of all historically underrepresented or marginalized demographic groups are encouraged to apply. DRSC is a qualifying employer for the federal Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program. To apply, please submit a current resume, detailed cover letter explaining your interest in the position, law school transcript, writing sample, and academic or professional references.
